My ideas....

These are a collection of my major ideas that I would have considered to use for this project, after extensive research on the background of these, my ideas started to develop stage by stage to the current one I have done my animation video to.

First idea

The idea is that an object can seem new and inspiring from person to person. A guy walks across the park, sees an object and gets inspired to create something out of that object. Another person walks past and sees the guys creation as an inspiration to create something else. The person after looking at the previous persons creation build something different from that. A creation is built one after another based on the last.

This idea was solely based on almost word for word of the quotes. Very little research was done at this stage, this idea was my initial interpretation of what I imagined what direction I would go.

Second idea

I will be creating a short story of a child growing into an old person and then passing away. It starts off with a young child experiencing everything as they grow, most of which the experiences would be new. As the child grows older he sees more, and new or uncommon things become more rare. As the child grows up and becomes old, he has seen most things and almost nothing pleases his imagination anymore. The man passes away and he can't experience anything anymore.

This idea was the first proposed idea for the project. After some research, I tried to incorporate some of the research found on the web and generated with this idea.

Third idea

Someone can experience vast amounts of new things by looking into a screen, more so than someone in the real world as the screen takes the imagination to achieve what is impossible in the real world and projects it in front of us. The experience of a mere screen can be broader than the experience of the world.

The idea is executed as two different screens simultaneously playing. One screen is reality, showing someone in third person doing tasks, walking about and experiencing but limited to the real world. The second screen is a recreation of the reality screen but in the style and art of a game. It shows everything the real world shows but more.

After doing more research and read Sherry Turkles 'Life on the Screen' I came up with this idea. It was based on a mixture of Turkle and Addisons quotes. The idea was also sparked off from a Berlin trip I went to and saw a screening of some conceptual artist which had two screens running at the same time.

It was only after more extensive research that I have come to my current idea which I've used for my animation

Bokurano (Uninstall)...

This is an anime series called Bokurano (Japanese) or Uninstall (English). The anime is very dark and almost twisted and explores strange elements of parallel universes, giant robots, and destruction of mankind.

The story consists of several kids who find a cave on a beach and explores to find that there is a person living in the cave. The person offers the kids to try out a "game" but requires the kids to sign a contract before playing. Right after the contracts have been signed the kids end up waking somewhere on the beach and not long after that, a giant robot starts to attack the city they're in. Another giant robot appears and sends these kids inside it, only to find out that the person in the cave is inside. The person explains that there will be several battles to come and each person must pilot the robot they're in once and must win the battle against the other robot.

The rules are to fight the other robot and must win or else the world will get destroyed. After the person piloting wins, they die. There are no quits or refusal to battle, otherwise the world will get destroyed.

Soon after a couple of battles the kids find out that the robots they fight are not just any robots. They are actually robots with people in the same situation as the kids themselves except from another parallel world.

The series is revolved around these kids and their experiences in dealing with the situation and the pressure of having to operate the robot to kill another person in order to survive. Some are unexpected cold in killing, finding no hesitation, and others could not find the courage to operate the robot because they're scared of not knowing what will happen when they do.

I find this series enjoyable to watch although it destroyed my brain afterwards. I like the concept of people being scared to use technology against another person because the outcome could literally be anything. What was going through the minds of the characters is also another thing quite interesting to think about because one day they were normal, the next day, they're killing to save themselves. The impact it must have had on them must have been huge.

Digital styles...

I've looked into a few types of styles I could use for the part where the main character goes into the portal and decided to go with crisp, colourful and real cartoony style. The reasons for choosing this is because I think that a style like this is a really nice but obvious way to show a transition from real life montage style turned to computer graphics. The style contrasts a lot from the montage style and I think thats how it could works so good.

Heres a couple of examples of styles that I think are similar to what I will be doing:

Rex Crowle

Tom Baker

The characters size may be a bit inappropriate for my animation but I enjoy the crisp, edgy art and the vibrant colours.

The Lawnmower Man...

The Lawnmower Man is about a character named Jode who suffers from mental retardation. One day he is shown some virtual reality games that he soon becomes involved in and participates in an experiment. Using drugs enhancments, virtual reality and cortex stimulation, Jode's intellegence starts to increase. He soon finds himself having telekinetic powers and a strong connection to computers and is able to manipulate virtual reality.

This is an interesting idea of a man increasing his intellence from the aid of computers. I like the idea of the computer giving him strength, upgrading him from a mentally retarded person to a kind of super human. He is also able to harness much more power when in virtual reality and the ambition of ringing every telephone in the world simultaniously proves his level of potential.

In a way the computer really has given us an increase in intellegence and power, but not on such an exagerrated degree. We increase our intellengence by searching up topics to learn on the internet and we can connect to multiple people to just about anywhere in the world via instant messengers.

EMA Adverts...

Below are two adverts promoting EMA to students.

The style of this animation is interesting, it's a scenery blended with real life pictures. The set or background of the animation is reconstructed using photos taken from various places and the hand is green screened into this set. I had something like this in my mind when I was thinking about what styles to use when I'm going to film the first and last sequences of my video as they're meant to represent the real world. I think this would be an interesting choice to use rather than filming the standard sequence.

The Digital Stroll

After having read all the quotes, I have decided to base my exam project on Joseph Addison's quote. My decision for choosing this quote is because I find it more open to different ideas than the others, based on my first thoughts. To sum the quote up in a couple of words, I would have to say the quote defines a new experience.

For my exam project, my idea is to create an animated video. The idea I will be using is taken from Sherry Turkles book 'Life On The Screen'. She quotes:

"The computer offers us both new models of mind and a new medium on which to project our ideas and fantasies." (Turkle, 1995, p.9)

My idea is that, in the reality we are limited to experiencing whatever exists in this world. The computer takes that limit away. It has offered us perpetual amounts of new experiences, all from the imagination.

To put this idea into work, the video will start of with a green screened person walking along some urban scenery. The person enjoys the urban scenery until it repeats, then grows tired of it and he starts to ignore the scenery. He carries on walking and passes through a portal. The urban scenery starts to digitise, the person and the scenery turns into graphics. He carries on walking through the urban scenery and piece by piece the scenery changes into the countryside. He takes notice of this new scenery and again piece by piece, the scenery starts to change into the sea. He walks on the sea and various objects go past. The sea drains and he starts to fall endlessly passing objects in the sky. He then lands on sand and walks along the desert. He passes unusual objects in the desert before the scenery slowly changes back into the urban scenery piece by piece. He walks along the urban scenery and passes through a portal and the graphics change back into real life. SLIGHTLY EXTENDED!!!!!

The concept is playing with the imagination in the digital world, the guy will walk across a variety of places each of which will become more weird. It will show that the digital world offers experiences that cannot be obtained in real life.

TVBOY A GO GO!!...

This is an animation about a song called TV BOY by Masahito and Kotubu

I am drawn into this video because of its strangeness. It seems to revolve around a character who has a TV for a head. I do not understand the lyrics but I assume it is animating to the lyrics. I like the simplicity of the video, there's nothing complex or fancy looking in it but still manages to keep an interest for the viewer with its animation, colours and weirdness.

The Matrix...

The Matrix is a sci-fi action film released in 1999.

The idea behind the film is that, what people perceive as reality is actually the Matrix. The Matrix is a simulated reality: the world we think we're living in is the simulated reality. The real world in the film 'The Matrix' is a run down war zone with only one surviving city with humans in the entire planet.

I think the concept of 'The Matrix' is a tricky one to understand as I never got the idea first time watching. The citizens of the Matrix therefore doesn't really experience anything as the whole "world" is one big simulation, and they're probably unconsciously wrapped up in a pod somewhere in the real world. Although it is debatable whether the simulation is a real experience itself.

If compared to the film 'Strange Days' then the SQUID recordings played via the Mini Disc are real, as they're real happenings from real people. But in 'The Matrix' the world is one big simulation and nothing is real nor are the people conscious.

The comparison of reality and simulated experience is an interesting but complicated matter to discuss. Although it has given me ideas of how I can play with experience.

Strange Days...

Strange Days is a cyberpunk sci-fi film released in 1995.

The film revolves around SQUID recordings: a recording of someones memory and experiences directly from their brain. These recordings are played back using Mini Disc-like devices. The users will experience anything that the SQUID has recorded as if they are doing it themselves. The protagonist deals in erotic SQUID recordings and one day receives a disc which shows someone he knows getting murdered.

I like the concept of being able to pass around recorded experiences. The experience is therefore not a unique one to the person anymore. In the film these experiences are portrayed like products, able to buy them as if it's almost like a holiday but able to experience more than just what a holiday could offer. The possibilities of these devices can be good but it can be equally as bad, exploiting the dark sides of what people have experienced.

Life on the Screen...

Life on the Screen by Sherry Turkle

"The computer offers us both new models of mind and a new medium on which to project our ideas and fantasies."

In the reality we are limited to experiencing whatever exists in this world. The computer takes that limit away. It has offered us perpetual amounts of new experiences, all from the imagination. Better yet, it has allowed a greater extent of people to experience more things.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button...

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a short story published during 1921. It was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. A film adaptation was made in 2008, based on the short story.

The story is about the life of a person called Benjamin Button. He was born with the physical traits of an old man, but as he ages, he becomes younger. Eventually his body ages into an infant.

The idea of someone physically aging backwards is something that really caught my attention. It's uncomprehendable how a boy with a physical feat of an old man could feel like, likewise, when his mental age turns old, his body becomes a child. His experience in life would be twisted. Normally the mind and body would work together in the flow of getting older. When the body works in the complete opposite, it's hard to even try to understand how the mind and body collaborates.

This has really got me thinking in how an experience can also be something out of the norm as well as weird and not just something new.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar...

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a childrens book published in 1969.

I used to read this book as a child. It is about a hungry caterpillar who eats different foods each day for 7 days, and on the next day it wraps itself up and becomes a butterfly.

I enjoy the idea of the caterpillar being born and then eating its way through a variety of foods, and then suddenly hatch into a beautiful butterfly. The caterpillars journey throughout the story builds up for the finale of the birth of the butterfly. I see the story like a balloon being filled up day by day ready for the big pop soon to happen when it gets too full.

Animorphs...

Animorphs is an English written sci-fi series aimed for young adults. Published from 1996 to 2001 and consists of 54 books and 10 companion books.

"Five humans, one of whom eventually becomes a hawk, and one alien obtain the ability to morph into any animal they touch; they name themselves "Animorphs", a portmanteau of "animal morphers". Using their ability, they battle a secret alien infiltration of Earth. It is told in first person, with a different narrator in every book."

I find the concept of the animal morphs quite compelling. It would be amazing to even just imagine what experience they go through to turn into the animal they touch. What kind of things they feel, see, sense and hear, and how restricting or free would it be to be trapped inside an animal.

Growing Old...

'Everything that is new or uncommon raises a pleasure in the imagination, because it fills the soul with an agreeable surpirse, gratifies its curiositym and gives it and idea of which it was not before possessed'

The concept I will be using is to try and make the quote alive. The quote will start as a person is born. As the person experiences new things, the quote becomes more valid. As the person grows older and experiences almost everything, the quote starts to fade because there is nothing new or uncommon left to experience. When the person dies, so does the quote as there is nothing left to experience.

To put this concept into work, I will be creating a short story of a child growing into an old person and then passing away.

The music will change throughout the video as the child grows into a man, and as the man grows old.

Stop motion with wolf and pig...

This is an interesting video I found on Youtube about an animation of a wolf and a pig. It's done using stop motion animation techniques but takes its further. The animator printed out over 1000 pictures and has animated the video around his house. He uses some clever concepts to adapt the pictures around the house. The pictures are not solely focused on the main characters themselves but also provide for the surrounding scenery.

This is an intriguing type of animation I could think about using for my video. The trailing pictures could represent the experiences my character goes through.

Tuesday

Nintendo 64!!!!!!!!...

This clip shows two children expressing their joy for when they see that a Nintendo 64 was given to them for Christmas.

The quote Addison uses 'because it fills the soul with an agreeable surprise' suits this video clip very well.

Thorpe Park...

The two clips below are from a series of adverts shown on TV for new rides at Thorpe Park. I thought these particular adverts were interesting because they focus on one person and the the person riding on the attraction. This could signify that the advert itself could be the actual experience of the persons ride or their interpretation of the ride.

This first clips shows the person looking up at the ominous ride as if its the first time he has seen something like this, giving the impression that the ride is mighty and dominating. You then see the persons expression while he is riding the attraction, and his mind kind of flies off to space when the ride reaches its highest peak which could signify the grandness and height of the ride. He then shows a variety of expressions afterward showing the ride has not ended.

This advert shows a guy standing bare footed in a bathtub full of ice cubes. His expression looks like he is really surprised about this, or even scarred from some sort of experience. He looks down and lava is beneath his feet and we see the ride being used. This could be the memory of when he was riding the attraction, possbly the first time as he look like he was still recovering from it.

Thursday

Xbox 360 Advert...

These are a series of Xbox 360 adverts released late 2008. I thought these adverts can relate to the Addison quote nicely, on how 'it fills the soul with an agreeable surprise'. In religion and philosophy, the soul can mean the essence of a human being but it is also often considered to be synonymous with the mind.

Each clip shows a person expressing their excitement in slow motion. The camera orbits around their heads and reveals a miniature theatre in place of the back of their heads. The miniature theatre could signify what is going through their minds, or their interpretation of excitement in their heads.

Joseph Addison

Everything that is new or uncommon raises a pleasure in the imagination, because it fills the soul with an agreeable surprise, gratifies its curiosity, and gives it an idea of which it was not before possessed.

A quote from Joseph Addison who was an English poet, essayist and politician. It came from an essay of his, written on Monday, June 21, 1712.

I chose this quote because I thought it was an interesting one to work with. Everyone sees different thing within their lifetime, some things may seem common to some people but may also seem new to others. The quote is open to almost anything from objects, sounds, visuals to feelings, taste and smell. To sum the quote up in one word, I would have to say the quote defines an experience.

D and AD Evaluation...

For the D and AD project we had the choice of choosing any appropriate brief we wanted. I decided to create a 2:15 minute music video for the piece of music “Pigsy in Space” by Damon Albarn. I found that the music was very hard to draw out any ideas so it took a while before coming up with a concept. I think the outcome of the music video could have been a lot better, I didn’t think that the message I was trying to explain was very clear in some parts and the two styles I’ve tried to use as a transition through the different eras was not effective at all as they both seemed too similar. The challenge in this brief was the music as I found it dull and doesn’t play around with levels of sound too much but it was a good experience in trying to work with a difficult piece of music.

I could have worked into the styles a lot more to define and separate the two and also could have played with the colour palette and experimented with it more. I would like to have taken a different approach if I had to do this animation again, I would have tried out other techniques for animating such as a hybrid of real life video and digital artwork.

William Orbit...

This music video is quite interesting because it's similar to my idea. It is a good reference I could use later on for ideas of how to animate some things as well as angles and mood change.

Colour style...

As my animation grows into a western style art I want the colours to compliment the style too so I have looked into the famous cartoon 'Tom and Jerry'. I've noticed at first glance that not very much bold colours are used as everything is quite saturated and washed out, there seems to be a lot of blends for the background which are quite suttle and the gradient mixes are not wide therefore blends well together.

For my colour palette I will use colours associated with the time and try to create the same washed out effect 'Tom and Jerry' has used. I have done this to show as much westernisation of style as possible. Though these colours will be overclouded by gradual reds and browns to show the effects of global warming and the atmosphere becoming hotter.

Wednesday

Steam boat animation...

Throughout my animation the style of art will mutate subtly from traditional Chinese drawings to Western cartoon style as shown above. This is to emphasise the gradual changes in culture as the characters travel towards the West as well as hinting that they are getting closer to their goal.

Glacier 60000...

"In Glacier 60000, the indexical information versus the computer generated one forms the center of the work. Every time a jpg file is opened and closed it is decompressed and compressed. Hence the compression every time the file is opened and closed it looses some of its original information. Through automation I made the file open repetitiously several thousand times, saving a new copy each time. As an effect the recognizable photograph is transformed into an abstract almost map-like image before it is lost completely. All the images are then animated into a sequence. Here the instability of the digital information communicates a self-reflexive symbolism as it ‘melts’ the glacier into a field of grey tones becoming almost empty of the desired information."

http://www.emmawieslander.com/Site%207/glacier60000.html

I really like this concept of a digitalised version of global warming, I could use this idea of melting ice and flip it around to represent the earth getting hotter because of global warming.

This is screen shots of a video about global warming and how it has affected the inuets and their struggle to live, I can use this concept of an inuet standing on an iceberg for my idea representing the struggle of humans through global warming.

Transmediale...

Transmediale

"Looking beyond the evolving alarmist scenarios of environmental catastrophe prevalent in the global warming debate, transmediale.09 shifts the focus of this challenge to the broader cultural, societal and philosophical consequences that the collapse of the northern ice barrier reveals. Are we about to reach another historically succinct moment of unavoidable and revolutionary change, a point of no return leading to an unforeseeable global transformation akin to the fall of the Berlin Wall 20 years ago? Will it be a time in which we realise that everything will be different, without knowing how everything will be different?

In the search for DEEP NORTH, transmediale.09 seeks the paradoxical and global consequences, the re-orientation, shifting of perspectives and means to interact with the issues of cultural and technological development, innovation and creative sustainability lurking below the surface of climate change. DEEP NORTH becomes not a fixed location, but a paradigm transforming loss into a complex state of being and cultural development - an indicator of location becoming fused with global introspection.

In the real and metaphorical breaking open of the both the North and South polar zone's locked and inaccessible mysteries we discover both new dangers and opportunities. Reinforcing the sense that the Earth acts a truly global system of interrelated events where a shift in the perception and attitudes towards cultural interdependencies become critical, DEEP NORTH is a call to artists, media activists and cultural practitioners to explore the roles that art and digital culture play in defining new media strategies beyond the rhetoric of climate change.

DEEP NORTH focuses on the remote, silent ... indeed, deep zones of artistic and cultural sensibilities and processes of transformation from the arctic to the desert, from the depths of network practice to the remote constructs of scientific and technological systems. As our sense of the natural environment vanishes to be replaced by models, projections and technological mimicry, the need to fundamentally transform cultural thinking by applying, adapting and exploring the creative use of technology increases, thus critically affecting the means of communication, interaction and perception... in the DEEP NORTH of our global cultural awareness."

http://www.transmediale.de/

After a week in Berlin Transmediale Festival, I have re-thought about my concept of this current project. I found that my ideas were not very strong and after coming back from this festival I decided to do the animation on global warming using the lyrics from 'Pigsy In Space' as a base. I think the lyrics and the theme of global warming can work around each other nicely which can give various interpretations of journey of humans and climate, how it is changing and what it brings e.g. polar caps melting, weather becoming hotter, magic palm leaf fan is the change we have to make to cool us down.

Wednesday

Colour themes...

I have researched on some Chinese art to see what types of colour themes they use so I could try to adapt to some of the themes or mix them together.

I really like the colour theme used for this picture, the red really contrasts with the background enhancing the colour and noticability of the roses. The background colour is light and pale which blend with each other well because the colour range is quite narrow. The colours used are not sharp or excessively bright so its easy on the eyes.

There is only one colour used but the blend of the black is very effective in showing tones and textures of the mountain. The picture made using water based and is exactly how I interpreted the song.

This picture is also water based, the colour range is very blue based with hints of contrasting orange or washed out red. I really like the idea of using a small amount of contrasting colours to make those items stand out.

There are some strong and contrasting colours in specific parts of the paintings to emphasise a specific area but a lot of it is within an area of a certain colour range, these colours are also colours of natural things which narrows down the amount of colours I could use for my animation.

Mediums and materials...

These two videos are a great inspiration to get me thinking about the different mediums and materials I could use or the possibilities of using.

This one is done by drawing on a white board, rubbing out and re-drawing.

This one is created using clay, shaping and re-shaping objects which is a complete re-make to the first video using different elements.

This is an example of how one thing can be achieved using different techniques which is important because it shows the ideas don't always have such linear way of approaching.

Stop motion...

MUTO by BLU

This video is interesting as it shows limitless possibilities of how animation can be done, using any means in its environment and using surreal ideas not being afraid of them.

I can apply this to my project, instead of thinking of something specific and working on it extensively, go about many different ideas and concepts that could help or make ideas flow more.

Wednesday

Various ideas...

Looking at various adverts and pictures and how they use different ideas and ways to show things. This is interesting as it lets me look at what various ways to present their ideas and how they can play with anything digital and traditional.

Playing with cultural references which can also can have a humorous effect on the picture.

I like how this advert uses mixed materials and media to create the image of a speeding bike. For my project I could apply the same idea of mixing media and materials instead of solely using digital.

I like the technique of tilt shifting photography, playing on perspectives and also focusing on a specific part of a picture.

Playing on everyday shapes and sizes to make them represent something else is interesting as it means not everything is literally what it shows.

This example is what I visioned for part as my animation, where smoke forms an image of something and in this case an image of a unborn baby.

Tuesday

Smoke..

After looking into the water and ink effect, I found that smoke was very similar in style in terms of flow and cloudiness. I really like the concept of the music video being abstract as I think it fits well with the song. Its unpredictable and mysterious so there is a lot of directions for this to go.

Here are a few examples of smoke made into shapes and images I found on the web.

This is a fusion of different colours, blended together to look like almost like an explosion.

This is multiple smoke effects blended to make one image of a grim reaper.

Smoke make to look like a person.

A really nice abstract shape in which three different colours blend with each other.

Water and ink...

This is my initial idea of what I had in mind after listening to the music.

The concept of flow and trickling, ink dripping into water diluting into characters and scenery then disbursing into the water. It would also have a stop frame effect to create a time lapse like the pictures are almost being painted into the water by the ink.

Here are a few more videos that have different amounts of ink being poured into the water to create different effects and feelings. The heavier the ink clouds the heavier the music, the lighter the ink cloud are the mellower the music is.

I found this video especially nice as it plays with the time of ink flow, how it can achieve pace by doing this.

Current monkey...

Olympics 2008

This is the current style of monkey used in the Olympics 2008.

Its very bold in colour with little texture, very illustrative style which can be used for animation as well as still.

Also looks very hand draw in some close ups, the textured edges and crossing over lines make the animation seem doodley.

A definite cartoon feel in the style of art. Contrasting in terms of background and characters style. Character seems like traditionally hand drawn but the background is computer graphic gradient shine.
