William Orbit...

This music video is quite interesting because it's similar to my idea. It is a good reference I could use later on for ideas of how to animate some things as well as angles and mood change.

Colour style...

As my animation grows into a western style art I want the colours to compliment the style too so I have looked into the famous cartoon 'Tom and Jerry'. I've noticed at first glance that not very much bold colours are used as everything is quite saturated and washed out, there seems to be a lot of blends for the background which are quite suttle and the gradient mixes are not wide therefore blends well together.

For my colour palette I will use colours associated with the time and try to create the same washed out effect 'Tom and Jerry' has used. I have done this to show as much westernisation of style as possible. Though these colours will be overclouded by gradual reds and browns to show the effects of global warming and the atmosphere becoming hotter.

Steam boat animation...

Throughout my animation the style of art will mutate subtly from traditional Chinese drawings to Western cartoon style as shown above. This is to emphasise the gradual changes in culture as the characters travel towards the West as well as hinting that they are getting closer to their goal.

Glacier 60000...

"In Glacier 60000, the indexical information versus the computer generated one forms the center of the work. Every time a jpg file is opened and closed it is decompressed and compressed. Hence the compression every time the file is opened and closed it looses some of its original information. Through automation I made the file open repetitiously several thousand times, saving a new copy each time. As an effect the recognizable photograph is transformed into an abstract almost map-like image before it is lost completely. All the images are then animated into a sequence. Here the instability of the digital information communicates a self-reflexive symbolism as it ‘melts’ the glacier into a field of grey tones becoming almost empty of the desired information."

I really like this concept of a digitalised version of global warming, I could use this idea of melting ice and flip it around to represent the earth getting hotter because of global warming.

This is screen shots of a video about global warming and how it has affected the inuets and their struggle to live, I can use this concept of an inuet standing on an iceberg for my idea representing the struggle of humans through global warming.

Transmediale...

Transmediale

"Looking beyond the evolving alarmist scenarios of environmental catastrophe prevalent in the global warming debate, transmediale.09 shifts the focus of this challenge to the broader cultural, societal and philosophical consequences that the collapse of the northern ice barrier reveals. Are we about to reach another historically succinct moment of unavoidable and revolutionary change, a point of no return leading to an unforeseeable global transformation akin to the fall of the Berlin Wall 20 years ago? Will it be a time in which we realise that everything will be different, without knowing how everything will be different?

In the search for DEEP NORTH, transmediale.09 seeks the paradoxical and global consequences, the re-orientation, shifting of perspectives and means to interact with the issues of cultural and technological development, innovation and creative sustainability lurking below the surface of climate change. DEEP NORTH becomes not a fixed location, but a paradigm transforming loss into a complex state of being and cultural development - an indicator of location becoming fused with global introspection.

In the real and metaphorical breaking open of the both the North and South polar zone's locked and inaccessible mysteries we discover both new dangers and opportunities. Reinforcing the sense that the Earth acts a truly global system of interrelated events where a shift in the perception and attitudes towards cultural interdependencies become critical, DEEP NORTH is a call to artists, media activists and cultural practitioners to explore the roles that art and digital culture play in defining new media strategies beyond the rhetoric of climate change.

DEEP NORTH focuses on the remote, silent ... indeed, deep zones of artistic and cultural sensibilities and processes of transformation from the arctic to the desert, from the depths of network practice to the remote constructs of scientific and technological systems. As our sense of the natural environment vanishes to be replaced by models, projections and technological mimicry, the need to fundamentally transform cultural thinking by applying, adapting and exploring the creative use of technology increases, thus critically affecting the means of communication, interaction and perception... in the DEEP NORTH of our global cultural awareness."

After a week in Berlin Transmediale Festival, I have re-thought about my concept of this current project. I found that my ideas were not very strong and after coming back from this festival I decided to do the animation on global warming using the lyrics from 'Pigsy In Space' as a base. I think the lyrics and the theme of global warming can work around each other nicely which can give various interpretations of journey of humans and climate, how it is changing and what it brings e.g. polar caps melting, weather becoming hotter, magic palm leaf fan is the change we have to make to cool us down.
